2011
Vivat crescat floreat ingenium!
In relation to the four-hundredth anniversary of the birthday of the Great Citizen of Gdańsk, the Sejm of the Republic of Poland declared the year 2011 the “Year of Johannes Hevelius". This is a very important figure not only for Gdańsk, but also for contemporary Europe. The world of science still takes advantage of his legacy. “The Year of Johannes Hevelius" provides an opportunity and encouragement to learn more about His genius in the field of astronomy. It is worth reminding, that he was not only an astronomer, but also town councillor, brewer, printer, botanist. Hevelius was also a creative craftsman, for most of the measuring devices that constituted his observatory's equipment he made himself. The scientific achievements of this distinguished citizen of Gdańsk were recognised already in 17th century. He was invited to join the Royal Society in London as the first citizen of the Republic of Poland. Polish sovereigns of that time: Jan Kazimierz and Jan III Sobieski, as well as European monarchs such as Luis XIV, supported him financially and also took advantage of his scientific discoveries and modern perception of the world. The city of Gdańsk has been preparing for this grand anniversary for several years. We organise cultural and educational events that focus on the “Polish da Vinci". Each year the streets of Gdańsk witness a special birthday parade and there is also Johannes Hevelius New Year's Concert held with the participation of the stars of the world music. The cultural route of Johannes Hevelius in Gdańsk gives the opportunity to see the places that are closely related to the famous scientist. The Hewelianum Centre, situated on the Góra Gradowa, was built to pay tribute to Johannes Hevelius - this facility constitutes a kind of centre for the promotion of science, where each year the Scientific Awards of the City of Gdańsk are awarded. All these events were available to the citizens of Gdańsk and tourists, and so it will be also in the case of most of the events planned for the year of the anniversary. The year ahead of us is exceptional... Gdańsk is proud of Johannes Hevelius and invites all those who want to learn more about this extraordinary figure.

Idea of the anniversary
Johannes Hevelius, called by some people "Polish da Vinci", is a unique figure. It is difficult to count all his talents. He was a brewer, he managed a printing office, he was an alderman, he loved to travel to discover new realms of knowledge, he was interested in painting and he painted himself, he developed measuring, and sometimes even navigation devices. He was even interested in botany. However he is most famous for his scientific achievements in the field of astronomy. He created prototype of pendulum clock, earlier than Huygens. He was an outstanding explorer of celestial bodies and is recognised as the founder of modern selenography. On the roofs of his three houses he built an astronomical observatory, that he further equipped with telescopes and measuring devices that he built himself, which made the observatory the best equipped facility of this type at that time in the world. All these accomplishments were credited by the Royal Society in London - Hevelius as the first citizen of Poland was invited to join this prestigious scientific association. Knowledge about the astronomer should be significant particularly to the citizens of his home town. Unfortunately Hevelius is not familiar to many of the citizens of Gdańsk. Promotion of culture and science of 17th century coincides with Gdańsk's candidature for the title of the European Capital of Culture in 2016. Development of European society should be based on raising the awareness of citizens concerning the contribution to the intellectual development of Europe and world. Implementation of the project that would educate broad audiences is on one hand attractive and interesting in its form, and on the other indispensable if we want the Hevelius Year to be long remembered by the citizens of the city on the River Mołtawa. Through the cycle of scientific and cultural events addressed to various social groups and involving numerous circles, we want to co-create the Hevelius Year and contribute to the promotion of the idea of “the powerful mind of the Great Citizen of Gdańsk". This are the beginnings of the development of multidisciplinary platform, that would link activities of many institutions, allow exchange of knowledge and at the same time ensure entertainment. Our actions are addressed to various age and social groups and their objectives range from scientific to cultural.

Johannes Hevelius - Life Sketch
Sky of the grand citizen of Gdańsk and the contemporary image of the world
Johannes Hevelius was born on 28th January 1611, and died on 28th January 1687. The time between these two dates was filled with admirable and diligent life spent mostly of exploring Urania - the muse of astronomy. Wealthy father ensured his son comprehensive education. Already in the middle school in Gdańsk, Peter Krüger - the student of famous European astronomers: Johannes Kepler and Tychon Brah - introduced young Jan to astronomy. Then he studied law and economics in Leiden. Within 1631-1634 he travelled across England and France. There he met in person many scholars, with whom he maintained lively scientific correspondence in the following years. After his return to Gdańsk Hevelius took over the management of family brewery, participated in the activities of the brewers guild and in the works of the city council. When he was forty years old he was elected the councillor of the city of Gdańsk for life time. He did not give up his passion - astronomy - then and consistently continued to sacrifice a lot of time on exploring this discipline. At the end of 1639 he built his own astronomical observatory on the roofs of his three adjacent tenement houses He collected there so many devices and instruments that soon it became known as one of the best equipped observatories in Europe. It was visited by scientists and monarchs - Jan Kazimierz and Jan III Sobieski. Hevelius himself built his astronomical instruments and carved beautiful ornaments and decorations on them. He himself ground lenses for many telescopes. He also constructed numerous quadrants, sextants and octants for angle measurements with naked-eye. These devices were produced with great precision, which allowed measurements with an accuracy, that was admired and disbelieved by many contemporary astronomers. He performed almost several dozen thousands of observations of various celestial bodies. He published the results of these observations in several books, some of which were even several hundred pages long. The first grand work by Johannes Hevelius - Selenographia, sive Lunae Descriptio (Selenography - description of the moon) of 1647, included 40 drawings of various phases of the moon and two beautiful maps of the moon. Johannes Hevelius indicated on these maps about 600 details of the surface of the silver globe. He discovered the phenomenon of the libration of moon in longitude and explained its causes. This work is supplemented with the results of observations of sun and planets: Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn. This was the best study of the moon at that time and in the following 150 years. In the book Cometographia (Cometography) of 1668 - that was over one thousand pages long - Hevelius presented contemporary views on the nature of comets and described the comets that he himself observed in the years: 1652, 1661, 1664 and 1665. In the attached tables he collected information presented in astronomical, historical and philosophical works regarding 250 comets observed since the oldest times. In the monumental work Machinae Coelestis pars prior (The celestial machine: The first part), published in 1673, Hevelius described the astronomical instruments of his well-equipped observatory, his biography, history of astronomy and commendation of astronomy as science. Machinae Coelestis describes the greatest instrument of Hevelius - 46-meter-long telescope, hanged on a 30-meter post. The telescope did not have a full tubus, but a transparent construction. It was set on the meadow opposite to the Oliwa Gate. Although it was very impressive, Hevelius rarely used it, since its operation was extremely inconvenient. Other noteworthy device was a huge azimuth quadrant - impressive, beautifully decorated instrument that was described in the same work. The radius of the quadrant was 1.5 m, and the radius of the azimuth circle was 0.5 m. Its construction lasted for a long time: it was initiated in 1618 - for Piotr Krüger, the teacher of Johannes Hevelius, and was completed by the very Hevelius In 1644. Apart from the traditional construction solutions he applied there micrometric screw, which considerably improved the accuracy of measurements. The second part of Machinae Coelestis pars posterior, published in 1679 and dedicated to the monarch Jan III Sobieski, included observations performed by Hevelius. The last work Prodromus Astronomiae was published after Hevelius' death in 1690. It was further continued in the second part - Catalogus stellarum fixarum (Fixed star catalogue) - that contained the positions of approximately 1900 stars, including 1600 stars observed by Hevelius, and in the third part - Firmamentum Sobiescianum (Firmament of Sobieski) - that was a beautiful atlas of constellations. The figures of constellations from this atlas are commonly recognisable and are published in many current publications on the history of astronomy.
